Writing challenging essays is both frustrating and enjoyable.

When you go the easy way, finding sources is a cinch.  When you don’t, you have more to discuss and expand, but it can be tough to find appropriate sources.

In the end it’s always worth the extra work, though.  It makes the writing itself more fun, and professors tend to enjoy reading things they haven’t seen repeatedly.

ETA: 3/5 sources acquired.

God, I love Bedford/St. Martin’s.

I know that’s a weird thing to say, but their resources on literature and proper style are just fucking amazing.

Best words ever heard from my Lit professor:

“Because your grade is so high, there’s no need to revise again.”

COMMENCE REJOICING. The entire time I was editing that essay last night, I was thinking I’d have to edit it one more time. The thought of spending more time on “My Kid’s Dog” made me question the worth of my existence. But now I don’t have to!

I’m really excited that we’ve moved on to poetry in my Literature class.

I LOVE POETRY.  And also, we started with two of my favourite poems (Pablo Neruda’s “Verbo” and Billy Collins’s “Introduction to Poetry”).  I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THESE.

I did sadly have to switch from rambling about poetry back to working on my Ron Hansen “My Kid’s Dog” essay.  I FUCKING HATE SHORT STORIES GUYS.  Honestly.  I’ve never really connected with short stories.  There are a few select ones I enjoy — mostly from the lovely Mr. Gaiman — but in general they kind of repel me.  SO CLOSE TO BEING DONE WITH SHORT STORIES FOR THIS CLASS.  SO CLOSE.  I SEE THE BEAUTIFUL LIGHT ON THE HORIZON.

My professor at least liked my point of view on that short story.

So yay for that!

Have you ever read something and interpreted it VASTLY DIFFERENTLY than everyone else in your class?

I just did that with My Kid’s Dog by Ron Hansen. They all see it as a funny, heartwarming tale. I see it as the portrait of a man who feels his place as the master of the house had been taken from him.

Truthbombs from The Tart.

elbeebee:

thetart replied to your quote: In short, I’m all for recognizing how texts are…

I think the real issue is how often social justicers expect every character to be a SJ Mary Sue instead of a reflection of real life & all its fuckedupness. Not every asshole is going to die in a pit of vipers, not every hero has a white horse, etc.

Even though I’ve just been blogging about shit that’s bugging me about a set of characters in a book, I really do agree with this.  If we expect all media and literature to reflect an idealized version of the world, not the reality, it’s going to be a) horribly boring, and b) not a true reflection of anything with which we actually deal.

She walks out toward them, an apparition in white and blue velvet, her head held high as they stare in awe at her, the goddess. I don’t yet know what power feels like. But this is surely what it looks like, and I think I’m beginning to understand why those ancient women had to hide in caves. Why our parents and teachers and suitors want us to behave properly and predictably. It’s not that they want to protect us; it’s that they fear us.

He was not afraid. Having lived a year in Sachenhausen, having managed through four months in the woods, he had no fear left. But he did not want to die for someone else’s story. If he had to die, he wanted to die for his own.
